Dave Chappelle has been making waves with some offbeat musical performances at live events this year, popping up at places like Erykah Badu’s birthday party and a Portland strip club to sing Radiohead’s “Creep.” Now, he’s kicked things up a couple notches with a tribute to Prince that also, for some reason, involved Chappelle moshing during Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
Chappelle was in Minneapolis doing a series of standup performances, but, on Monday night, he hosted Dave Chappelle’s Juke Joint, a small, but lively, affair. Chappelle had harmonica player Frederic Yonnet and Band with No Name there to play a bunch of covers of some iconic songs. They covered “Can I Kick It?” by A Tribe Called Quest. Of course, they covered “Creep.” But, it all went to the next level when “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was played. Chappelle jumped into the crowd to mosh during the song and sang along on stage.
Then, when the clocked struck midnight, and it became Prince’s birthday, the event became a tribute to the late musician who is forever linked to Chappelle. The lights turned purple, the band played “Purple Rain,” and the party went into the early hours of the morning, which is fitting for a tribute to Prince.
All in all, it sounds like a completely insane night. Dave Chappelle remains as eccentric, and delightful, as ever.
