Frederic Yonnet joins Ziad Jazz Quartet at Bechtler Museum of Modern Art

The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art will feature urban jazz harmonicist Frédéric Yonnet as part of their  New Sound Series: The Harmonica in Jazz. Known for decades as the choice instrument of street musicians and loners who wanted to express themselves through country music or the blues, in Yonnet’s hands it becomes something else entirely: a lead voice in urban and contemporary jazz, R&B and even hip-hop. With each tune, stereotypical walls come tumbling down as Yonnet presents the harmonica in a refreshing and modern context. It’s stylish. It’s cool. It’s brilliant. Backed by the Ziad Jazz Quartet, Yonnet eagerly demonstrates his jazz chops, but is quick to take you to musical places you did not know the harmonica could go.

The quartet, which performs the first Friday of each month, features Ziad Rabie, artistic director and saxophone; Noel Freidline, keyboards; Ron Brendle, bass; and Rick Dior (or Al Sergel), drums.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for the 6 p.m. show and at 7:45 for the 8:15 show. Seating is first come, first served. Standing room only is available after all seats are claimed. Each concert is performed without an intermission in the museum lobby.
